Shirky is a consultant and teacher on the social and economic effects of Internet technologies. This book is a clear-eyed survey of the application of social media (blogs, Facebook, etc.) in organization social action. Basically, the cost of organizing, coordinating and executing group action is now zero, so monolithic top-down organizations are at a huge tactical disadvantage when taking on informal, decentralized groups.
Tons of inspiring examples. The parishioner action against the Roman Catholic hierarchy is Boston after the priest molestation scandal is a particularly interesting model.
