This is heartbreaking, I had a lot invested in this story, so I did some digging and it seems grundy is correct.
Here's what you do: take the top image in that comparison: Blur it by about 3 pixels to hide the pixelation. Then use unsharp mask to sharpen up the edges. Then adjust levels to bring out details. Here's what you get:
Anyway, I was able to achieve almost the quality of the DVD. Can anybody else do it better? Our integrity is important, we should stop spreading this and look at it more carefully. The video comparison is hard because of all the filters and dust and noise going on. Maybe someone can do an audio comparison?
