Here are some comments on Mary Freeman's personal
integrity program
I posted some of Mary's success stories from her ethics program over the years.
Several years ago I came across someone I thought could benefit, so I phoned up Mary to find out more about it. From some of the comments she made as well as her references to definitions I'd not used or even read, I realised she had a deeper and broader knowledge of this area than I. And I'm familiar with it as I used to be an Ethics Officer.
So I rang her up a few days ago after someone asked if she used only LRH or some additions. This was a real good button! I got a personal phone lecture for nearly an hour and an overview of what she does!
Mary has spent 30 years doing her program, and was inspired by LRH saying a class VIII can put in ethics anywhere. She took that very seriously, and observing many in the LA area, including OTs, were stuck off lines she figured maybe out tech and maybe out ethics. So she handled accordingly, and was very successfull getting people back onto org lines, usually using her ethics program.
This of course got her into trouble! The Orgs didn't really like a roving dept 3 terminal bypassing them successfully! However around that time the Volunteer Ministers Handbook came out which apart from anything else was a primer on handling ethics in the field.
Neck saved, Mary went to Flag to do her NOTs. They wouldn't accept her because of her " screwy" ethics handlings. She then took her own advice she had often given to others, that one should help the orgs give you the service you want. The staff are under all sorts of pressures, conflicting orders and command lines etc. So. Be cause not effect.
She said to the Flag ethics officer that she was willing to do any course or training they wanted, and thus did the Ethics Specialist Course there.
She then went to a struggling mission and sprinkled some magic ethics dust over various personnel and stats started going up, so she returned to flag with said stats and a fistfull of commendations and was able to route onto NOTs.
Mary's first comments to me on this query, were that it’s the ethics tech in COS that's screwy. I needn't dwell on that too much, as most here will have had some experience of that or know someone who has. Also “executive arbitraries" often got entered, and this went into the justice system whereby if a comm ev didn't give the results an exec wanted, it was re-convened until the wanted result was obtained. Typically comm evs in the SO, and to an extent in other orgs, are held after business hours around midnight, when everyone just wants to get home and get some much needed sleep.
Mary also commented that most ethics officers are not well trained. I believe in fact the requirement as written by LRH ideally is someone class IV, or maybe VI and OT3. Also IMO it should also be someone who has had some exerience of life. Astra Woodcraft has written and I believe spoken of her experience as a 15 year old flag ethics officer being expected to handle the minor sexual peccadiloes of OTs decades older than her, such as masturbation. From anothers personal statements of sec checks on OT 7 the subject of lingerie is also raised in ethics!
There I was in all my innocence thinking ethical stances were taken on carbon footprints etc, not what women wore to bed!
You can possibly surmise from the above examples that ethics tech has gone to hell In a handbasket. That’s apart from mentioning the arbitrary nature of 6 month sec checks for those at the top of the bridge who should per our philosophy have become the most ethical of us all!
I would here like to mention Mary's Quals. She has done the original OT levels, solo NOTs, Rons Org Excal and various other levels on the RO bridge. Training wise, she is an old time class VII Power auditor, and did the class VIII course under LRH. Prerequisites for these last two courses is the Briefing course where one studies all the red vols, all the books, and roughly 500 LRH tapes. She also studied NOTs under David Mayo.
Delivery of tech has all these materials to help, and also a highly trained C/S to oversee that the tech is working and kept standard, which is routinely done after every session.
Ethics? Its down to one dude, no back up, no C/S, maybe some execs shouting at him arbitraries such as to declare someone's ass!
I'll briefly touch on my own experience here. I was recruited from the academy onto staff. I could have mildy insisted I want to work in tech, but I actually wanted admin, and was placed as E/O held from above. I had no hat pack. Only the green and red vols. At the time, when being given people to handle with ethics I decided I had to do it KSW wise, ie Standardly. So I was very slow and dogged, and got some good results. Mostly from my best scn ability of helping people study materials and clearing words. Most staff members I worked with had crashing MUs such as ethics = punishment! Amazingly that had never been picked up previously. And London Org was a well established one where LRH once had " Flag". I think the guys in qual were reasonably knowledgable, but they had their business, and I had mine.
So back to Mary's program. Its essentially about rehabilitating the person's first dynamic.
Just learn't from Mary that the ethics conditions follow the BE DO HAVE scenario that permeates this subject. Never thought of that before!
Confusion, treason, enemy, and most of doubt is about beingness, identity, viewpoint.
The last stages of doubt enter into doingness or action, Liability and Non-E, Danger and Emergency follows that with heavy accent on taking action. Then Normal, Affluence, Power are about RESULTS,products, and exchange, and thus havingness.
So.... To have one must do. To do one must be. Thus concentrating in the area of beingness is indicated strongly, as that resolved the rest may follow. And thus we have products, stats, havingness, happiness, etc.,
We also know, per LRH on ethics tech, that if one dynamic is low, it can pull others down.
Yet the COS almost exclusively looks only at the third dynamic. This does however miss problems staff and public may have re the first dynamic. Not to mention severe arbitraries entered. For example disconnection. As scientologists, we should be at the crossroads of the marketplace, the world, helping all areas where ever we can, and that’s apart from being skilled auditors. As a mere communication course grad, we should be able to handle any social situations with communication alone, and that of course implies good manners.
Disconnection? That’s plain bad manners!!!!
(Especially when it breaks up families, friendships, businesses, etc)
Looking at first dynamic is primary as that is where we all live. So Mary's program does this. Usually looking at the low conditions re beingness. With intense study and word clearing!
On looking at the first dynamic Mary likes to use the definition of this found in the original thesis, and I suspect also the chapter "The Basic Individual". Mary works with the client to establish which part of the first dynamic is in a low condition. One for example may be earning lots of money, and yet living a life of quiet desperation and misery.
Let’s for example take a condition of confusion.
" Find out where YOU are." [You is in italics in the original]
Here Mary swings in with severe, precise word clearing. What is YOU?
Its not nessesarily where your body is (per TD definition of Thetan #9).
Mary on confusion gets the client to look at several definitions of thetan.
There are also locationals that can be done with this formula. There is the expanded confusion formula but that seems primarily third dynamic oriented.
I asked Mary to say more about this area. Here's what she wrote:-
“Using a demo kit, the client picks out and identifies every particle in the confusion. (I write it all down.) Then we clear the Confusion formula, with the use of Thetan def #9, 8, 2 and 4 in the Tech Dictionary, to clear the word you. After some 2wc about the application of these definitions to the formula, we then do the locational on the whole area of confusion. I do this by running Reach and Withdraw on every particle, (using a gradient of more and more R & W on each one until it is flat.) The use of R&W is done on the particles as they are in the person’s universe (not in the demo), as well on whatever turns on during the process if it doesn’t blow by the third time on the gradient R&W. (It is hard to describe all this without actually doing it on you so you can get the subjective reality. It can get rather detailed, depending on what the person comes up with. That is another reason why this program takes a trained auditor.) The comparison happens as we go through all these steps. The EP is the Formula done as a result of confronting the condition this way. "
Note that Mary does not arbitrarily assign a condition, she works with the client to discover which condition in relation to which area, and the client must be VGIs and in agreement on this.......... OK this is obviously squirrel! [ irony off

Mary does not go in for a glib answer to these formulas in the lower conditions.
" Find out where ~you~ are."
" Find out that you are."
" Find out who you really are."
One for example may go on a fishing holliday, glad to leave the stresses of life whatever they are, and formally or otherwise conclude, "I'm here on a lake fishing and very happy." Superficially one has done confusion. It is perhaps a lovely key out.
However it doesn't handle whatever got you into problem areas of life or the stresses you keep bumping into. And won't stop them recurring!
Then there are other conditions to handle. The underlying rule here is one must first thoroughly confront the condition before applying the formula.
Ethics ~is~ reason and the ~contemplation ~ of ~optimum~ survival. Thus this program is about rehabiliting the client’s abilities in the direction of better survival. Its very definitely for the client and no one else.
Mary's course usually takes a few weeks as I understand it, with lots of study and word clearing. These are my comments on a very quick run through by phone, and do not contain all of Mary's tools, actions, and wisdom. Had I not studied the area and worked in it I couldn't have even followed the conversation, and then it was still a bit of a struggle.

I am not afraid to confront this anymore. It's actually been the biggest win I have ever had in Scientology. A win that I will NEVER invalidate and this is in writing. I FINALLY have such a reality on the tech but also on the reactive mind. It's blown me out that the mind is this complex. You are so amazing in helping one discover this stuff within themselves, by themselves but with your gentle guidance.
I know this is a major key to helping me go free and begin my ascent to Clear. It's actually amazed me so much (the power of this tech) that I have been considering quitting my job to come to you and go up the bridge to Clear etc, as we discussed. I am not saying I will do this but it's made me want to go Clear even more so than before.
