mail and phone calls? strange coincidence

About 6 months ago I started getting TONS of mail from Flag after literally 10 years of radio silence. I went online and requested to be removed from all mailings, listing only my name and address, but definitely not my phone number. I never heard anything back, but eventually the mail slowed down. My current address is new, and I have never gotten mail here before.

I told my parents about this (who are no longer active in the church either, but still get the mail and phone calls). Come to find out, Flag had been calling my parents looking for me in regards to being taken off the mailing lists. My parents refused to give them my number, but gave me their number to call about the mailings. I called them from Skype, which leaves no caller ID info, and again gave my name and address, and mailing label codes. Within 3 weeks, all mail had stopped.

Strangely enough, I get a phone call last weekend on Sunday morning from Flag, on my CELL PHONE! The guy wanted to verify my mailing info (he read it to me...all correct btw), and finally I interrupted and asked what the purpose of the call was. He said just to make sure their database has my correct info because they have important things to mail to out. I told him I had asked to be taken off all mailing lists and do not want to be contacted ever again. He goes to ask if I have seen the new DVD, I say no. I also asked how he got my phone number... he said it was on his sheet, but didn't know what it came from.

So then he says he can take care of the mailing issue, just has to ask a few question, like why I want off, and WHAT I DO FOR WORK? WTF?

I told him it's none of his business, and said I had to go.

Anyway, I check my mail and sure enough, there is that DVD to watch. I did watch it and have to say it's well done, but I don't see how people can believe it.

I know for sure my parents didn't give them my cell number. Where the hell did they get it?

No idea how they got the number. But we now know they are very desperate to get more people in than ever. So they are culling through the dead files for more stats for mailings.

Online white pages, reverse lookup directories, could be a number of things.

Have you ever tried finding your own cell number? As Grundy said, give it a shot. Do some internet research, reverse-lookup your address and see what phone number it gives.

Scientology does have an amazing capacity to find and abuse people's contact information against all odds. Sigh.

cellphone #'s

This cellphone number thing infuriates me!

The other day my wife's cellphone (which is almost never used and has NEVER been shared with anyone except immediate family!) rings - and a male voice asks for ME by Name! Wife said "wrong number" and hung up.

But, this is OUTRAGEOUS! There is no way this number could have been linked to my name. The bills do come to the same mailing address, though. That's all we could come up with for a possible link.

Any others experiencieng this? Anyone know how this could be done?

That is wierd. It's been years and they still don't have my cell number, and I'm somewhat close to several people in the church.

I've had the same kind of thing happen. I even changed cell numbers, never gave it out, and somehow people from the church called me.
I got a call from some girl who claimed to be at the HGB, wouldn't identify what branch, trying to talk to me about coming back in the SO. She claimed to that we were "friends from before" but there is no way we were friends, I don't forget my friends, and I had never heard her name even mentioned (I know probably 1000s of Scientologists by name/reference). She tried really hard to get me to talk to her about my "situation" but I refused, and she was incredibly evasive with all my counter-questioning. Eventually she gave up. I just changed my number again.

Assuming these numbers are not listed in a public phone directory, maybe the CoS has a few "in" people at the telephone companies. Its probably not even in the form of a complete DB dump by a sysadmin, but more likely a moonlighting staff member working in customer service, and can easily do a customer search as part of their routine job.

Interesting question for those getting calls on their cell phones, which network are you on?

When I was working for the church and with PIs, I learned that many "better" investigators would cultivate contacts within the phone companies who would, for a few dollars, or few hundred get unlisted numbers, phone records, etc.

My guess though, now, is there is some sort of internet based cell phone number directory.

SCIENTOLOGY CALLED MY NEW CELLPHONE NUMBER

SCIENTOLOGY CALLED ME ON MY NEW CELLPHONE THAT IS LISTED IN MY NEW HUSBAND'S NAME. IT HAS BEEN YEARS SINCE I HAD ATTENDED THEIR CLASSES AND I HAVE SINCE MOVED SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE GETTING MARRYING.
A MAN FROM SCIENTOLOGY CALLED ME FROM OUT OF THE BLUE FROM AN ANONYMOUS NUMBER AND ASKED FOR ME BY NAME. I TOLD HIM HE HAD THE WRONG NUMBER, AND HE CONTINUED TO RUN OFF ALL OF MY PAST ADDRESSES AND I TOLD HIM HE HAD THE WRONG PERSON.
HE ASKED ME IF I HAD RECEIVED THEIR FINAL MAILING. I TOLD HIM HE HAD THE WRONG PERSON. I NEVER LIVED AT ANY OF THOSE ADDRESSES.
I FINALLY HUNG UP.
NOT SURE HOW THEY HAVE ALL THIS INFO ABOUT ME, OR HOW THEY NOW HAVE MY NEW CELL PHONE WHICH IS LISTED UNDER MY HUSBAND'S NAME WHO OBVIOUSLY HAS A DIFFERENT LAST NAME THAN MY MAIDEN NAME.
I RESEARCHED MY NAME AND NUMBER AND CHECKED THE REVERSE DIRECTORY AND I AM UNLISTED.
THIS CREEPS ME OUT.

Unwanted calls, mail and in-person delivery to my door

I left Scn in the 1980s, collected my untaken course and auditing funds and regained my self. The past 25 or so years have been good; leaving is not something I regret.

However, recently various Scn "mailing centers" have started calling to confirm my home address or name and phone number. I know this is a business building technique and that I'm not being targeted, but it is still quite annoying. They called daily, sometimes more than once a day. I record to screen all my phone calls, and generally was not at home when they called anyway.

A month ago though, I was home. I told the caller to stop calling this number as we considered it harassment, and the calls stopped for several weeks.

This evening someone called around 9 pm with the same address correction excuse. An hour later he called again, saying he was outside the security gate to my complex and was trying to hand deliver a package, which he says he left there when I didn't pick up the phone.

I don't know what to do next. Assuming the package is really there, I want to take it to the police, as I feel stalked. I don't want to get involved in a lawsuit, I just want my privacy. I am on the National Do Not Call list, how can they legally be calling me after more than 20 years? I certainly can unlist my telephone number, and would consider the monthly expense the price of being young and foolish in my youth.

At this point I'm looking for resources to guide me. I learned that I can take the sack of accumulated mail to the post office and they will block it if I declare it harassment, so I shall. But the idea that someone has come to my home gives me the willies.

The mail is coming from ASHO, AOLA, IAS Administrations in Los Angeles and Flag Service Organization in Tampa and Church of Scientology Religious Trust in Clearwater. The callers leave mostly toll-free numbers so I don't know where the calls originate.

Thank you for reading and for your suggestions.

P.

The only way that I've heard to get yourself off their lists is to ask all kinds of questions about the OTIII information to the person on the phone. Xenu, DC9's, vocano's, explosions etc.

Each area has the numbers listed sepperately. So yu might get calls from Flag then later be getting calls from PAC.

phone calls, mail and in person appearance

I theoretically know about OTIII already.

I don't want to learn more about Xenu and the rest, I am done with Scientology. I also don't want to read up on Baha'i, something an old friend would love me to do. I am at peace as is.

However, I do have a lawyer who would write a cease and desist letter on my behalf, and send it to each of the orgs that are sending me mail and calling me.

Any ideas about the wisdom of this? I fear I may be setting myself up to be attacked if I respond. Last I heard, I was fair game for taking back my unused course and auditing deposits.

I am still getting 4-5 pieces of mail per week. I am starting to collect it to take to the post office to see if it can be blocked there.

Scientology mail and calls

The post office can help only with first class (currently 42 cents for 1 ounce) US mail. The bulk mail just goes to be recycled. However, I did write "refused" on two of the first class letters and put them back into a mailbox, and the mail has slowed down to a trickle.

I also told the "mailing department" folks who called to have me fill out a removal form in order to to remove my name from the calling and mail lists (duuh) that they had enough information to do that without calling again, and then I hung up. I intend to do that from now on. I also threw the accumulated 3 pounds of mail into the Dumpster. I haven't had a phone call since.

Happy New Year!!

I have gotten junk mail off and on from the Co$ since I left. Advertisements for services, LRH fiction and lecture video catalogs, price lists for membership in WISE, and so on. I thank God often there has been no other harassment. I don't consider junk mail a serious issue. The UT-Austin Ex-Students Association, local grocery stories, credit card companies, GEICO, and Dell Computer have been as active in sending junk mail to me as the Co$ has, in some cases more so. I have not received phone call campaigns from Co$ as of this date.

I would welcome any confrontation, though. When I was a security officer, I dealt with all sorts of criminal threats and harassment. The worst was a woman I called "the Sultana" who had a bunch of drunk Hispanic gang member boyfriends. Her kids and their buddies were into assault, vandalism and petty theft. I had to bust these people and police the ghetto apartment complex in which they lived for two years. I also did security at hotels, bars, malls, construction sites, convienence stores, factories, you name it. I even bodyguarded Brian Howe of the rock group Bad Company at a concert one time. I know how to deal with bullies. If there are any Co$ fanatics out there who plan on harassing me and adding to the cause for opposition to their church, I got three words for them- "Bring it on!" :P

For now, I will say no thanks, Kristal. I appreciate the invitation, though. If the job market continues to dry up here in America, I may head that way. I have always been attracted to the Great White North for many reasons. I hear it's a very nice place.

One caution- if you have read my posts here, you may know by now that my attitude is quite different than that of many Scientology critics. I believe the church is both good and bad, not all bad, and that if they would only tone down their abusive activities and increase the good they do (the esteem and other benefits some get from auditing, charity, pro-education and anti-drug programs, etc) they might even get public acceptance. However, significant time and reform within Scientology is needed for that. Also, Scientologists, critics, and others (including devout followers of religions that aren't Scientology and world governments) must be willing to work together and allow each other to exist. On all sides, the corruption of prejudice and intolerance must be edited out. Those forces, I believe, are suppressive more than any other emotion. They are consequences of fear. To quote Star Wars, fear leads to anger. Anger leads to aggression. Aggression leads to the Dark Side.

The Dark Side is something I want to avoid in myself. I desire to keep my mind open and myself available to make friends with anyone. I am willing to make enemies too, but I leave it up to other people if they want to be my adversaries. I don't work against them without good cause, and even when I am opposed to someone I am still willing to learn from them. If I meet a Scientologist, for example, I won't cast them as an evil cult corrupter or a brainwashed drone at first glance. I will wait for their actions and words to show me their character and then respond accordingly. My work in psychology, law enforcement, and human relations has taught me this is best.

I don't protest Scientology in public and any criticism I direct at them is constructive. My celebrity fanfiction features both good and evil Scientologists and I have met the inspiration for these characters in real life. I educate myself about both sides of Scientology, valuing the good and spurning the bad. I hope others will do the same, even though I recognize it is their decision in the end. Freedom of mind and diversity of thought are key tenets of my personal philisophy. Charity towards others, self-determination and harmony are also part of it. I've been told I'm unique.

I would enjoy meeting your Org, I am sure. Whether they would get along well with me is another matter. I definitely would have some things to say to them about their attitude towards you and your husband.
