It seems to me that you could list these factors as: (1) honest belief they are doing what is needed to save the planet. (2) fear/threats/humiliation/coercion/restraint/brute force (3) loyalty to family, friends, and other members who remain in (4) feeling there is nowhere else to go / no other options (5) inertia - change is hard (6) Stockholm syndrome where a victim knows he/she is being wronged but identifies with the perpretator and makes excuses for wrongdoing (7) other / you name it. Without needless re-telling of stories already done elsewhere, I would be interested in reading how you Ex Sea Org members would analyze the relative importance of these factors in your own experiences. If anyone wants to speak on behalf of a third-party, or the Sea Org as a whole, that would be great input as well. EDIT: I would put RPF / Ethics Actions / Sec Checks / Lower conditions in with Factor #2, but some of you might have a different or more detailed classification of these factors.
