Hey'all,
Milgram's Obedience Experiment, conducted in 1961, is a great demonstration of why people in cults go along (like sheep) with the abuse they endure and are ordered to inflict, rather than standing up to the Power-trippers.
Here's an essay by one of the very few of Milgram's subjects who resisted and would not follow orders that went against his sense of right and wrong:

IMO, a group is as healthy as it can tolerate dissent.
